The Royal Proclamation of 1763 restricted white settlement to east of the Allegheny Mountains and gave all lands west of the mountains to the newly created province of Quebec. The British reasoning was that white settlement "over the mountains" was a major source of friction with the Indian tribes and Britain had just fought two costly wars (The French and Indian War and Pontiac's Rebellion) in the western frontier and wanted to avoid further confrontation.
The move offended almost everyone in the 13 colonies however. The middle and southern colonies were angry because they had claims to these lands. The New England colonies felt they had been betrayed because the proclamation put the French Canadians back in charge of the western lands and they had just fought a costly war to prevent that very thing from happening.
Outrage over the proclamation was one of the leading causes that led directly to the American Revolution which began in 1775.
