Yes the food was crap It depends on what war and what was the economic times of the country going into war. But most of the time the food was pretty bad (if there was even food to begin with).
No, they were very poorly fed, the bread was always stale, (it took 8 or so days to get it there) There was always meat with it, however very little,(6 ounces) they usually had biscuits, and most of the rations were most likely soiled or infected by a corpse or some sort of rodent or or lice.
