Puerto Rico has been a territory of the United States since 1898 when it was taken from Spain as a result of the Spanish-American War. It is organized as a Commonwealth (Free Associated State) and elects its own governor and bicameral legislature under authority of the US Congress. Its people are legal citizens of the United States, but cannot vote for the President of the US unless they establish permanent residence in one of the States.

For some international purposes Puerto Rico is treated as a separate nation.
