I tried to explain this but ran out of time. OK. Swissair is an airline- an operating company akin to a bus line or similar. In the United States what are called Antitrust Laws prohibit operating companies- such as airlines, from making their own aircraft. These laws go further in the US insofar as there are normally separate contractors ( manufacturers) for airplane frames ( bodies) and engines, jet or piston. These are called Production diversity or diversity production laws and were introduced during the Roosevelt administration. The only major exception was Curtiss-Wright, who now make engines only ( they produced construction equipment for a while in the fifties- unrelated to aircraft, of course). so what happened, after the big Swissair crash ( a flight lll (one-eleven) well they took a huge loss. eventually Swissair ( air line) went out of business and re-organized under another name. one to watch,. I am sure, pun intended. so that is the story. These ( Diversity production) laws and practices are put mildly, controversial, and they aren"t applied to say, Guns or cameras, where Kodak makes ( or at least used to ) make both cameras and film ( though Kodachrome is no more). or guns and ammo from the same house such as Remington, Winchester-Western, etc.

Why are seat belts used in cars and airplanes?

AnswerSo if there is an impact of some sort you are restrained to your seat, therefore minimizing injury.AnswerSimple. It's called inertia. In airplanes they are to keep you in your seat in case of severe turbulence or... the plane takes a nose dive (you don't want to be at the bottom of a pile of people thrown to the back of the plane when you crash, do you?)In cars, it's even simpler. You are moving along at say, 45 miles an hour, and hit something that brings your car to a dead halt.... however your body (and anything unsecured in the car) will keep moving at 45 miles an hour until it hits something that makes it stop. Wouldn't you rather that something be a seat belt and not the windshield that will slice your face up like salami?AnswerSeat belts are used in cars and airplanes because if there is a crash, you won't fling forward and crash any part of you body. You might move slightly forward, but you won't crash you head with a bang.
