The deep south, from Florida to Louisiana were settled by the Spanish or French and going up the Atlantic coast from Georgia were mostly settled by the English. As a matter of fact Georgia is name for King George II, the king of England in the early 1700s.

Men who were in debt had the option under James Oglethorpe to travel to Georgia to work as indentured servants. Not many went to the southern colonies for religious reasons.
