Following the American Civil War, many factions wanted to establish the United States on the world stage. The United States had long wanted to acquire Cuba from the Spanish empire that they knew was on the decline. However, up to this point they had not been successful. With a combination of media yellow journalism and pressuring Congress for action, the United States was soon engaged in the Spanish American War.
