Well many reasons that had to do with weather and holiday sneak attacks, but the most important reason is because of two battles. One is the battle of saratoga, the Americans needed the French help, so to prove to them they can win the war they won the battle of saratoga. When they won the tough battle the French helped and then there was the battle at Yorktown (in New York of course). George Washington got a plan but he needed the French navy's help. So then a French genral said "the navy has arrived" George Washington hugged him yes he actually hugged him laughing. Back to the story so the Americans surrounded a British army by LAND the French navy took WATER, so genral Conwail surrendered his whole army. Then the Treaty of Paris was signed it said the American are an independent country.
