Weapons played a large role in the US Civil War. The introduction of repeating rifles, for example, made assaulting the enemy entrenched behind solid fortifications a deadly risk. These types of rifles also made cavalry units better suiting to scouting or fighting with other cavalry forces. One notable exception was cavalry forces dismounting and becoming rifle firing infantrymen. Advanced artillery pieces were also a defining element. Well placed artillery batteries could wreak havoc on charging soldiers.
