William did'nt win because Harold Hardrada failed. He won beacuse Harold Godwinson's army marched all over the country before the battle so they were too exhausted to fight properly.

What was the result of the battle of hastings in 1066?

The Norman (ie a Viking living in what is now part of France) Duke William's army of invasion defeated the followers of Earl Harold Godwinson of England. Harold was killed in the battle. The defeat of the English enabled Duke William (known later as William the Conqueror) to take control of all of England.

Why was William's army better?

It is a mixture Williams men were probably better, however Harold's men had just marched 250 miles north to Stamford Bridge to fight Harald Hadrada, as in September he heard that the vikings had landed also the winds were directing the wrong way for William to cross over to the South Coast. When Harold got to Stamford Bridge the vikings were drunk so it was easy to kill all of them. But by the time Harold had marched his men up 250 miles (no stops) and down 250 miles (no stops) they were exhausted, but they arrived to find the winds had changed direction and William had landed. They fought for 9 and a half hours and then William came up with a good tactic, to get his men to fake run away, then Harold's men followed to kill them but Williams men turned round and killed them. Eventually Harold died and William won.

Why did the Normans win the Battle of Stamford Bridge?

The Normans had many advantages over the English. First of all, literally all of the Normans were on horseback whereas the English were on foot. Another reason why was that many of his best troops failed to keep up with Harold and were tired on their march to the south. Also, the Normans were well equipped with better Armour and weaponry. The main reason why the Normans were triumphant over the English was because the Normans pretended to retreat, causing the Saxons to break their shield wall and be easily killed.

Why was Harald Hardrada a contender for the English throne?

Harald Hardrada was the strong Viking king of Denmark. He was related to King Cnut and his sons. He said this gave him the right to invade.Harold believed that an agreement made between the previous kings of England and Denmark gave him the rightful claim. He relied on his Viking reputation of being fierce. He was a tremendous warrior, and had travelled across and beyond Europe. Harold Hardrada was a true Viking, and wanted to take England by force.Earl Tostig offered to help Harold Hardrada. Tostig was Harold Godwinson's brother. He had been banished from England in disgrace.Hardrada and Tostig joined together to plan their invasion. They probably knew that Duke William was also planning to invade. They thought if King Harold was distracted by Duke William's invasion in the south, it would be easy to invade the north.
