Yes. "Witchcraft" is nothing more than using the powers of the mind to manifest your desires in reality. The ancient people who worshiped the old gods (Zeus, Amon Ra, Odin, Thor, Aphrodite, etc.) knew this well, since their lives were based upon nature. There were many deities who instructed mankind on the ways of witchcraft.

Christianity turned these original gods into the "Demons of Hell" and made witchcraft "evil" in order to gain complete control of society and scare people away from this ancient knowledge.

Depends what you mean by "witch." There was an Earth religion in which male practicioners were called "wiccas" and females "wicces." The Middle English double "c" makes the "tch" sound, so you would hear the females' titles as "witches."

"Wic," the root word, means "to bend" or "to be flexible." We use it in this sense today when we talk about "witch hazel," a flexible tree or a special kind of mathematical curve called the "witch of Agassi." It's also related to the word "quick" in the sense of "alive," as when we use the phrase, "the quick and the dead."

However, if the question means, "Did people have superpowers? Could they fly? Cast spells? Change into animals?" No, although many thought they did.

Witches in some form or other have been with humankind as long as we have been self aware. Healers, shaman, seers and wise ones have been sought out for advice, help or intercession with the spirits. It is only in the last few centuries that witches have been seen as objects of fear and mistrust. There is a growing movement of modern day witches trying to eradicate the "Hollywood" stereotype, and once more become persons of respect and acceptance.

Not the fairy tale or fantasy witches of books, movies or TV, but there there are Pagans who refer to themselves as witches. Many but not all are members of the religion Wicca.
