The number of military branches varies by country. In the US the primary four services are the US Army, US Navy, US Air Force and US Marine Corps. The Marine Corps is a part of the Department of the Navy. The US Coast Guard is brought into play during war time as well.

I grew up in a military neighborhood, and was not aware of anyone hating the coast guard. I would not imagine this is a widely held hatred. If there are people that do, like any other emotion, everyone is going to have their own reasons. It is probably better to discuss it with the person individually.
