Probably a relay MODULE. The air conditioner turns on and off by means of an electromagnetic clutch inside the fan belt pulley. Because the clutch requires a lot of electricity and you don't want a lot of electricity going through the switch on the dash, you've got a relay somewhere, an electromagnetic switch that allows a little bit of electricity from the dash (also sometimes from the computer to tell the air conditioner to stop for a bit to give the engine extra power to labor up a hill) to open and close contacts for the big electricity to the clutch.
