"It is lighter than the 7.62x39mm round; therefore it is more accurate" is a completely idiotic thing to say. the 338 lapua is heavier than the 308 Winchester but its more accurate. the reason most armies have switched to lighter rounds is that they produce less recoil, are more suitable for mass production, are less expensive and you can carry more in a magazine or backpack. Also, lighter, smaller rounds can sometimes be more devastating to soft targets (humans) in certain situations because they tend to tumble as they travel through a target leaving a large wound channel behind but. In contrast, a larger heavier bullet will usually have better penetration and will be more likely to penetrate a wall or door and still be able to inflict damage on the intended target but with the drawback of added weight and heavier recoil.
