There may be some confusion concerning the name Pyrenees Mountain Dog. The Question is confusing in that the Great Pyrenees (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Pyrenees ) is an AKC breed and the Pyrenean Mountain Dog is the British name. (http://www.pmdc.org.uk ).

(GP = Great Pyrenees PMD= Pyrenees Mountain Dog ) basically the same dogs.

Difference in appearance:Height: GP is taller and heavier than the GSD.

Body color: GP is basically white GSD is mostly a dark dog unless you are talking about the white GSD

Ears: GP= drop ears GSD= erect ears.

Muzzle: GP= no mask GSD= black muzzle

Feet: GP= 2 large dew claws on rear legs GSD=no dew claws on rear legs

Head: GP's head is larger all around and the GSD has a narrower head

Tails: GP tail has a curl to it, is longer and raises up over the back of the dog when alerted. GSD tail is shorter and doesn't go up over the back at all. hangs down like a saber sword in a small arch.

Temperament: GP= barks mostly at night, doesn't whine much and is more independent not needing of human beings. He owns his owner and decides who he will bond to. Makes up his own mind and is therefore difficult to train. Bonds to territory and is very difficult to rehome. The GSD= much more active/hyper, whines constantly, is much more intellegent and willing to learn commands. loves to be with his owner so much so that he will search out his owner no matter how difficult it is to find him. Can be trained to know who is friend and who is not. May be aggressive towards other dogs. May kill/eat livestock is very mouthy and will fetch and hold objects. Can get out of almost anything, digs under fences or jumps fences. is very athletic.
