A link or hyperlink contains the address of a website or a particular webpage on a website. You will find links on websites, blogs, in emails, PC documents, etc.
If a link is a direct link, then the website or webpage address specified in the link is, indeed, what the search engine will send to your browser. You can see the actual address when you hover the cursor over the link.
A website owner can create a redirect or a redirect link. Let's suppose you click on a link that specifies a file at: www.example.com/page1.html. When you click on the link, the search engine goes to the website and first looks at a special file to see if there are any redirects or other instructions.
The website owner can specify in this file that when a visitor requests www.example.com/page1.html - the search engine should instead send to the browser www.example.com/page44.html. Or a completely different website could be specified.
So, in our example above, when you click on the link for page1.html, the search engine goes to the website, looks in the special file, sees that it is supposed to fetch page44.html instead of page1.html, and does, indeed, send www.example.com/page44.html to your browser to display instead of the address specified in the original link.
