External communication is between the company and the public in general, suppliers, customers, stock holders and other stake holders to inform and advertise the public face of the company as well as for fiduciary responsibilities. A break down in either internal or external communication will eventually spell disaster when and if a disastrous event were to befall the company. An example would be, British Petroleum is still putting out image ads talking about the efforts and success stories after the cleanup of the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. This is an example of an external communication.
