Both Massachusetts bay colony and Virginia both suffered casualties. Casualties in Massachusetts were less severe than Virginia (30% party loss for Massachusetts but thousands more settlers on the way) Massachusetts attracted hard working well mannered men and women who established the colony on a firm basis.

The economies were different. While Virginia was strictly agricultural, Massachusetts had a mix of economies including shipbuilding, farming and shipping. While church attendance was mandatory in Massachusetts, this was not a mandate in Virginia.

Basically, the Chesapeake Bay colonists were there to get rich and then go home, having been told stories of fantastic riches, "rubies and diamonds lying on the beach" being one example. They were close to starvation because everyone was looking for valubles when they could have been farming. Then they made a variant of tobacco and sold that as a cash crop, making lots of money for the people with the land. The New England colony, on the other hand, was made to stay. They (New England colonists) were people who either a) thought the Church of England was too corrupt and wanted to leave England to get away from it, or b) thought the Church of England was too corrupt and wanted to fix it from within by being a good example. The Church of England didn't like people leaving or preaching to them, so both types were kicked out of England and then went to America.

"If we sought to discuss the comparison and contrast of the settling of Jamestown to that of the colonies in Massachusetts comprehensively we'd fill several volumes. There are literally thousands of post-graduate papers possible with as many aspects, constituents and breadths of topic as this. It is far, far outside the scope of WikiAnswers or ANY online Q&A forum to even BEGIN to respond to this question.

In addition to this, it might be argued that the question itself is not as well thought out as it might be. Oh, it's a good question alright, well spelt and grammatically correct, but it seems little consideration was given to the breadth, depth and width of what is asked and the scope, or even possibility of, a meaningful reply. Further, there cannot possibly be any single article, reference or even book that speaks directly to all the complex issues raised. Rather, there are dozens of books that take chunks of the material and laboriously chew through it. And all these works are by gifted individuals who have invested a life's work in their pieces of the puzzle, as it were."
