A large amount of sugar or salt is normally added

in order to preserve the product. Additives and preservatives are added to the item

and could trigger diseases like Asthma or Diabetes

in some people. A large amount of E-numbers can cause

hyper-activity in young children. Some

E-numbers are extremely harmful; leading to

cancer etc. The quality of preserved food isn't as satisfying as

that of fresh food. Some may find it bothersome to have to open

the tin of soup or fruit. The process of preservation may increase the

final price of the product. It is using up our man-made resources (e.g. Tin

for canned food). The food loses some of its nutritional values

whilst in the process in preservation.

Preservatives are increasingly perceived as unhealthy. Additives are regarded with some suspicion by consumers as they can alter flavors of food.

More seriously, some preservatives have been found to be harmful. The risks are statistically tiny but nonetheless, additives have been shown to cause or increase the risk of disease or other conditions.

That is not the case with allpreservativesand there are many that are completely benign. The food industry today has the burden of proof to demonstrate that additives are safe. It is challenging to prove that a preservative will never be harmful and impossible in many cases.
