There are many diseases that your pet dog or cat can transmit to you. Many people love their pets so much that they refuse to believe this fact. One of the worst diseases that you can get from your dog is LYME disease and is potentiality fatal as is RABIES.
Consult any Doctor and he/she will confirm it. But if you take sensible precautions you should be okay. Just dont let your dog share your ice-cream as I recently saw a guy do.
Its also not a good idea to let your dog or cat share your bed. This is another contentious topic because people refuse to believe their pet is dirty. Just think how often do they get washed especially after relieving themselves
