Distinguish between element and compound?

An element is a substance from the periodic tables of elements that stands on its own. An example would be potassium; another sample of an element is chloride which is also a basic. However, if one combines potassium and chloride, it then becomes a compound call potassium chloride Just remember element single compounds are made up of one or more elements.
