In a TIA, there are stroke-like symptoms, but they all fully resolve within 24 hours. However, in a CVA, the stroke symptoms persist beyond 48 hours, and may not resolve, or only partially resolve (with occasional full resolution in some cases).

Is hypercholesterolemia harmful?

YES. Hypercholesterolemia or Dyslipidemia is harmful if not treated immediately. It can cause blockages in the arteries or narrowing of arteries that may lead to insufficient supply of blood to the brain, thus resulting to Transient Ischemic Attack or CVA.

What is the medical term meaning mini-stroke?

What most think of as ministrokes are called transient ischemic attacks in medical terms.Often transient ischemic attacks (TIAs) are called mini strokes, though this is somewhat of a misnomer since in TIAs don't cause permanent damage to the brain, while strokes do.

What does TIA stand for?

TIA stands for Transient Ischemic Attack. A TIA is sometimes called a mini-stroke and is the medical term for stroke-like symptoms that occur and resolve spontaneously within 24 hours. A TIA is treated very seriously and may be the harbinger of a stroke in the near future. Cerebral ischemic events are broken down into symptom duration: Transient ischemic attack (TIA): less than 24 hours duration Reversible ischemic neurologic defect (RIND): 24 to 72 hours duration Cerebrovascular accident (CVA or stroke): greater than 72 hours duration, possibly permanent deficit. TIA stands for Thanks In Advance. ==Other== TIA was used in Blood Diamond to mean This is Africa TIA stands for many other places

Can mini stroke lead to major stroke?

A mini stroke is called a TIA or trans ischemic attack and yes one can occur after a CVA (cerebrovascular attack) or severe stroke

What is the scientific name for the stroke?

The scientific name for a stroke is "cerebrovascular accident" (CVA). It refers to the sudden interruption in the blood supply of the brain, leading to brain cell damage or death.

What are symptoms for a Tia?

The main symptoms of a TIA are; speech and vision may be affects, locomotion (walking) may be affects, ability to move limbs may be affectd, confusion may occur, it may be of sudden onset, there may be an inability to follow commands. How is a CVA different from a TIA?

A TIA (transient ischemic attack) is a brief episode that causes the same type of symptoms as a stroke, but usually much less severe, not life threatening, and the symptoms are often temporary, or at least mostly reversible. The cause is not always identifiable, but is probably associated with a partial obstruction of a vessel that reduces the oxygen level in a part of the brain temporarily. A CVA (cerebrovascular accident) or stroke, is caused by an event that causes more permanent damage to a larger area of the brain, resulting in more widespread damage and more permanent disability. Though many can recover to a great degree from a stroke, they can be fatal if they are widespread enough. The causes are usually a blockage of a major vessel that feeds the brain, or bleeding within the brain that causes pressure that damages surrounding tissue as well as deprives other areas of the blood that should have gone there.
