Most Amish orders do not allow full electricity in the homes (actul hook up into the electric company) but such orders do allow some electric items to be used as long as such is beneficial and not cause of idleness, such as electric refrigerators hooked up to gas powered generators.

While most Amish homes are not hooked into a full electric source, one 3rd of Amish homes do however have electricity.

Some Amish households actually have telephones strictly for 9-11 (if the head of the family feels there is a major enough emergency to warrant a call for 9-11, and if he feels that is the case then he will dial 9-11 on the phone).

That's a funny! Actual they DO! but not how we use them. Amish use a special carrying case a.k.a. a lantern. They did tie these to poles to light up the streets. Oh, the light part? There was a candle created by wax or perhaps would the Amish made. They lit it on fire, thus lighting up the way. Hope this shocking answer helps!

Yes, the Amish use electricity, but they generate it themselves, rather than buying it from an electric company, in the belief that the nuisance factor will keep them from using it for frivolous purposes.

They use it for cash registers, for instance, and to recharge batteries. Each Amish congregation has its own set of rules (the "ordnung") that they live by, not because violations are sins, but the rules help to remind themselves to live a Christian life. Consequently, some Amish retailers have electrical lighting in their stores, and others use gas lighting. If it's necessary to modify the ordnung, the local bishop discusses the proposed change with church elders, prays, and follows what God tells him to do.

In some states, taxes on businesses have to be filed online, so some Amish have computers, which are battery-powered.

The Amish do not view technology as evil, but they are hesitant to adopt it without good cause. The Amish community of Milan Center, for instance, don't use the fiberglas enclosed carriages common in Lancaster County; they use open buggies with only umbrellas to protect them against temperatures that reach -20F in winter, while Lancaster County doesn't reach 0F some winters. (For that matter, there's a congregation of the plain in northern Lancaster that uses buggies made of chrome tread plate!)

On the other hand, there's a elderly farmer in Milan Center that's severely crippled by Arthritis in his hands. Since he can't handle the harness needed for horses, and he doesn't have any sons, the bishop told him to buy a tractor, as it would be cruel to horses to do otherwise. He has a snow blade for the tractor and clears the lanes and barnyards of other plain farmers, as snow drifts grow quite high on the open flat lands.

There are something like three dozen different "flavors" of the plain sects in Lancaster County alone, so there are few generalizations that cam be made; they don't even all call themselves Amish. Most of them adhere to Romans 12:2. They tend to hold services in the Amish language (similar to German) and use German-language bibles, but the King James Version renders that scripture as "And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God".
