No. Our 330d has been subjected to -19 Degrees C and that was perfectly fine!
If i remember right the BMW diesels have cam chain.
Because as a rule Americans don't want small cars. VW ,BMW and M_Benz all offer diesels. the question is why don't U.S. manufacturers offer small diesels.
I would guess it would use BMW blue antifreeze. It has no phosphates.

There are a number of reasons for this, but varies between petrol and diesel. Diesels dont like the cold. The diesel engines in the 75 are BMW common rail engines.

the new diesels have great emissions, and get double the mpg, the old diesels have poor emissions though.
