Technically no. But, there is a table at the front of the church that is used to place the offering on and to serve the Lord's supper from. When there is a call for following Jesus at the end of the service that is referred to an altar call.

What are in churches?

The modern term 'church' come from the Greek, 'ekklesia' which means 'called out' ones. It was an assembly of disciples of Christ who met in homes, caves, etc... to support each other's beliefs and share the current news. It is a place of worship. Today, Churches are buildings, commonly ornate both inside and outside. It has at least one Bible, an altar, a lectern(s), pews and chairs. Some have organs and a choir, statues and paintings, confessional etc. It is up to the particular denomination/sect exactly what is there.

How many Baptist denominations are there?

There are quite a number of Baptist organizations today. The main governing distinctive of these churches is that they hold to the autonomy (independent rule) of the local church. Therefore some of the groups have organized because of location. Others have developed over controversy, as had happened in other groups considered as denominations: Presbyterians, Methodists, Lutherans, etc. For a further picture of much of the Baptists groups & churches, see the Related Link below: "What is the difference between Southern Baptists and other Baptists churches?" On that site also is resource below to a number of Related Links that reveal more about Baptist churches.

What do all priests have in common?

It would depend on if you were talking including chapels in "all Catholic Churches" or just parish Churches. All parish churches have a long list of things in common: an altar, the reserved Sacrament, holy water, confessionals, the Stations of the Cross, etc.

Where do Baptists worship?

Anywhere you please, if you mean as a congregation, that would be in a church.Baptist worship in a church. This is common like many other denomination (Methodist, Lutheran, A.M.E, C.M.E, Church of God and Christ, Anglican, Episcopal, etc). A church is a place where the members of christ meets.

What is an altar actually called?

An altar is actually called "the altar", although if there are many altars in a Church, they may be called by a specific name, like the main altar, the high altar, the side altar, the Blessed Virgin Mary altar, the altar of repose, the Blessed Sacrament altar, the St. Joseph altar, etc.

What is the difference in General Baptist and Southern Baptist?

Southern Baptist Churches are members of the Southern Baptist Convention, which is not quite a denomination, because it does not truly govern the individual churches. Baptists in general hold to, among other things, "autonomy" of the local church, but through the system of seminaries, Sunday School Board, and other services, the SBC is very influential. It is an association, the largest among Baptists, through which churches pool resources both for missions and outreach, and for services back to the individual churches. There are of course any number of Baptist associations of various sizes and purposes, but none quite as extensively developed as the SBC. The original national Baptist association formed in 1814 was called the "General Missionary Convention of the Baptist Denomination in the United States of America for Foreign Missions". The SBC was formed in 1845 in part over the usually regional differences in perspectives within this association regarding slavery. At the same time the Baptist churches up North remained somewhat loosely joined until 1907, when the Northern Baptist Convention was formed. This name ultimately was changed in 1950 to the American Baptist Convention & in 1972 to American Baptist Churches, USA. During the 1930's and '40's, controversy among the Northern Baptists over adherence to Biblical beliefs spawned the general Association of Regular Baptist Churches and the Conservative Baptist Association, which continue to exist today. These are the major Baptist organizations, yet smaller groups exist & Independent Baptist churches, who often fellowship & associate together, such as the Bible Baptist Fellowship See "Related Links" below for further pertinent information:

What is meant by the autonomy of the Baptist church?

A genuine Baptist church has no governing body over it. Each individual church is totally independent of other churches. Church "A" cannot make a decision for church "B" and church "B" cannot make a decision for church "A." Baptist do not have a church hierarchy of, for example, Pope >> Bishop >> Priest, etc.

What is the difference between southern Baptist and general Baptist?

Southern Baptist work together through a cooperative program or convention to support missionaries and to fund other programs. "General Baptist" usually support missionaries directly and do no cooperate with other churches to fund programs. The basic doctrine is the same. All baptist believe in full immersion baptism, eternal security of the believer, etc. Southern Baptist usually observe 2 ordinances (Baptism and the Lord's Supper/ Communion), some other baptist observe 3...these 2 and a foot washing ceremony.

What is an independent Baptist?

An Independent Baptist church is just that-- independent. They hold to the fundamentals of faith: the virgin birth, deity AND humanity of Christ, the trinity, inspired KING JAMES VERSION of the Bible for English speaking people, etc. They are independent by not being a part of an association or convention. Although we do like to fellowship of those with a like mind as us, we are not a part of anything formal fellowships. Not all Independent Baptist churches are the same. Most hold to conservative beliefs and music and dress, where others do not. I am an Independent Baptist, and at my church most of the the women wear skirts and wear modest clothing (we do not condemn those who do not, but it is our conviction) but some do not have convictions or preach against wearing pants. We only use the Red Book Church Hymnal for congregation singing and use traditional Gospel music, but some use contemporary music. It varies on what region of the country you are in and just the individual church you attend. Hope that helped!

What is the standard lectern height?

There is no standard fixed height for a lectern as all lecterns are different shapes and sizes. If you have a quick glance over the Internet, 45" (114.3cm) appears to be a regular height. A note of warning - lectern manufacturers often measure the height to the central point of the book rest/shelf area (sometimes called a table) and not to the full height of the front of the lectern. Of course many lecterns are adjustable and can reach down lower to accommodate diminutive people (primary school children etc)! If you want to buy or know more about the lectern then simply go through the site intelligentlecterns.com .
