The soul (as I remember it from my time spent in the Catholic Church) is broadly comparable to the mind as a Buddhist might see it.
As a soul is tainted by our; thoughts, deeds and actions (sins) so our minds can be polluted by the three 'poisons of; desire, hate and ignorance. Our mind/soul is the receptacle of these sins/poisons and not actually permanently changed by them. The sins/pollutions are created by our choices.
Where Buddhism differs is in this respect is the relationship between a creator God and a mind or soul.
People who believe in Buddha are commonly called Buddhists. They practice Buddhism
Hinduism
In Buddhism and the soul is not shown as cleary in Buddhism, inorder to stop confusion with the Aberhamic soul. In both Hinduism and Buddhism when someone attains nirvania there soul escapes the cycle of life and death and goes back to its true magical home free of suffering which in Buddhism is called Nirvania Buddhists do not think this. The concept of Brahman is a Hindu belief.
Buddhism has no creator God, Christianity does. Buddhism can be considered as not a religion, Christianity definitely is. Buddhists believe in rebirth, Christians believe that after death, we go to heaven or hell. Buddhism was founded by an [Enlightened] human, Christians believe that Jesus was the Son of God and is part of the Holy Trinity. Buddhists [unlike any other major world religion] believe that the soul is impermanent [Anatta], Christians believe that after we die, our soul lives on in heaven/hell
I am a Buddhist and I must say that those of my fellow Buddhists who believe this are incorrect. There is an immortal soul regardless of what you believe. You, me, and all materials in every direction make up the expanding and timeless Cosmic Conciousness. I could go on. . .
The soul can be reincarnated.

Gautama is not considered a reincarnation of a god. He is the historical figure who became known as the Buddha, the founder of Buddhism. Buddhists do not believe in a supreme god or the concept of reincarnation as the transfer of a fixed individual soul or identity. Instead, they believe in the cycle of rebirth based on the concept of karma.
Hindus, Buddhists and Sikhs believe in reincarnation.
