Answer:

This is the cause of much controversy. I am a Buddhist, yet I eat meat. This is because many Buddhists believe that one can eat meat as long as it is blameless. This means that the one must not see, hear, or suspect that the animal was killed because of one alone. Also, it is suspected that the Buddha himself, and his followers ate meat.

Answer:

HH the Dalai Lama has written on this. The eating of meat is neither inherently good or bad, as answerer #1 indicates the desire to eat meat and causing harm to the animal specifically to satisfy that desire is where the harm arises . Refusing to eat meat prepared by a host is bad - it falls under the affectation of saying "Look how good I am!" Wasting food is bad as well.

I Believe That If The Animal That Is Being Consumed Is Remembered For His Life Being Given And Respected As Well By Saying "Namu Amida Butsu" And Giving Thanks Then It's Ok. I Just Don't Agree With Killing Animals For Sport/Pleasure But Only For Our Sustenance/Survival. Does Any Other Buddhist Agree With Me?

Unlike North Americans many people eat horse meat so the question is not really about the eating of any specific food. A Buddhist is required to eat anything that he is given as a food tribute or which is prepared by his host. He may not specifically call for the death and butchering of an animal for his meal. In Tibet the opportunity of eating of a strictly vegetarian diet is unusual and many Tibetans (who are mostly Buddhist) eat meat. His Holiness the Dalai Lama ate meat while he lived in Tibet, but has come to eat a vegetarian diet.

Aside If your question was specifically about horse meat - it is very tender and dark. More like moose than beef. Especially nice when thinly sliced and raw.

Buddhists do eat meat and so did the Buddha.

This is because the Buddha as well as the Buddhists was practising the Middle Path when dealing with eating meals (nutrients). This path is free from two extremes of practice, like eating only meals and eating only vegetables.

The Buddha had never taught us to be vegetarians. He had never taught or encouraged all his disciplines (laypeople+monks) to eat a vegetarian diet. It is because just eating a vegetarian diet cannot help people attain Nirvana or it is not a merit (virtuous action) or it cannot give them a meritorious result. That's why he even did not practise vegetarianism, which is merely an extreme of eating practice and cannot give a special beneficial result. A vegetarian with anger, greed, delusion, pride, etc. in his/her continuum is much inferior to an eater of both meat and vegetables without anger, greed, delusion, etc in his/her continuum.

In fact, the Buddha had even already decidedly dismissed a demand for vegetarianism for all the monks made by Devadatta (a Buddhist monk who was the Buddha's brother-in-law and had once been a disciple of the Buddha; who also injured the Buddha in the toe to bleed by throwing a large rock at him from a mountain; who was against the Buddha's teachings with 500 of his own followers and who was the enemy of the Buddha) with 'The Buddha's Authority' which is of incomparably greater influence than 'The Veto Authority'.

Eating which kind of meal (meat or vegetables) doesn't matter; only the continuum of the eater (eating with anger, greed, delusion, etc.) in the process of eating matters greatly.

Here is a teaching of the Buddha dealing with food: "Every creature (all over the universe, and he himself) has to depend on NUTRITION (required amount of food)" Without nutrition, for example, one can definitely not practise Vipassana (Insight), which can lead us to Nirvana, because of the lack of strength which can be formed only by nutrition. A person who has required nourishment is, however, strong and active enough to do practices leading to Nirvana.

So, if we want to attain Nirvana, we do need to depend on required nutrition in a middle way so that we will be able to do practices leading us to Nirvana.

Some do and some don't. There are disagreements within Buddhism regarding the necessity for eating a vegetarian diet. A higher percentage of Buddhists are vegetarians than are members of western religions

No,

Basically, they are not allowed to eat meat.

Answer:

Buddhism doesn't have any "forbidden to" component. As a consequence Buddhists are not forbidden to eat meat. In some countries (e.g. Tibet) the general scarcity of food makes meat eating necessary, and if offered any food a Buddhist will eat it, this includes meat. The injunction is against the killing of sentient beings. Meat animals may not be sentient. There is also an injunction against asking for things not necessary for life - this would include a request that an animal be killed specifically for your consumption. In general many Buddhists refrain from eating meat to show compassion for all living beings.

It depends on which type of Buddhism. Some sects allow meat eating (ex. Japanese Buddhism) while others call for vegetarianism.
