Since the Buddha is in communion with the numerous gods, demons, and spirits of the world from his position in Nirvana, he can and does intercede with these characters to grant good or bad luck. As a result, they pray to him. Note that this position conflicts with Orthodox Buddhist teachings, but is quite common in Buddhist-majority countries.
