How does legalism work?

Legalism is believing that you have to be good enough to earn something that's already been paid for. The opposite of faith, which is knowing that there's no way you could ever pay for your sins, and letting Jesus carry you all the way.

A christians attitude toward Jesus is we love him. He payed for the sins of over billions of people. Some who will never even appreciate him. That's why we love him, go to church, and read the bible. It is the least we can do for the man who saved us from an eternity of hell.

Mark's Gospel focuses on Christ's divine powers. He highlights the power and authority of Jesus as the son of God. Why did Jesus tell the parable of the rich fool?

Jesus tells this parable after a man in the crowd asks Jesus to speak to his brother -- Luke 12:13 Then one from the crowd said to Him, "Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me." Jesus answers by telling the parable of the rich fool. Through the parable Jesus is saying 'you can't take it with you'. A key verse is Luke 12: 21b ............. and is not rich toward God." It is better to be rich toward God than worldly rich.

Why does Christianity add legalism to the simple truth Jesus gave us that the entire work of man is to believe Jesus is the Son of God?

First, let's define 'legalism' - per a dictionary, legalism is the strict literal or excessive conformity to the law or to a religious or moral code (see Pharisees v. Jesus in New Testament as an example). Today, a popular meaning being attached to 'legalism' is any form of biblical law-keeping is being termed legalism and is being avoided by many (society should be all the same stripe). It is being used as a pejorative especially towards those (different stripe) who have outward actions/activities like Sabbath keeping or following the Dietary Laws in the Old Testament or proper male-female relationships. This is an incorrect usage of the term for those who display the above lifestyles outwardly - obeying God's laws in the way He intended is the only acceptable way of life. Human nature - pride and power - are lustful vices within all mankind. The Pharisees gave a strict, even harsh religious interpretation of the Law which eventually dominated popular thinking. This in effect, undermined God's Law. The Pharisees added many of their own personal/human interpretations/regulations/rules to God's Law which had the effect of misrepresenting and misapplying them - adding an onerous burden of the masses. This led many to reject Jesus Christ as the promised Messiah, even though a simple reading of the prophecies would have pointed them to Him (see John 5:39-40; Luke 24:44).
