This is a controversial subject! Preachers often say "yes", and often use scriptures to support this view. However, a closer examination of the subject reveals that tithing in The Bible, wasn't about giving money, but about giving certain agricultural products. There is a cool website that explains this and many other questions about tithing, showing that there is no Biblical basis for Christians to tithe.

AnswerWhether Christians tithe (giving a tenth of their income) or not, it is to one's benefit to give, and give expecting nothing in return. This honors God, and he takes care of a cheerful giver. After all, everything you own is his to start with. AnswerEach one should decide in his heart what to give. There is no law to say that 10% should go to your church. The Old Testament people gave 10% of their goods, the early disciples gave all of it. The one who tithes is overall healther and welthier according to U.S research. Those who give are also happier. The aim of the Christian regarding giving ought not be just ten percent, but more every year to where their heart has compassion for, whether is be missionaries, charities or friends and strangers who are in need. AnswerThat's why there are "poor" christians because they don't believe this to be to present for us. What do you want to tithe for the Lord if you have no cattle?ect... the life style back then was different and that's how they managed to live, we now live in different circumstances but that doesnt change when it comes to tithe. We just tithe in money not in products. A true believer will pay his tithes, not just money but obidience to the Lord. Some people can pay all their tithes, but be wrongfully before the Lord in that they have no love for their neighbor/brother and think that they can get pass by with tithing. Not so. Obediance is better than sacrifice (money, goods, cattle, riches, ) but if you have no love, nothing is worth. Answer

I think the argument about tithing is more of an argument about support of the church. Some churches compel (which is wrong- 2 Cor. 9:7) you to pay your tithes with a threat of a curse or with rewards of blessings by using verses out of Malachi about "robbing God".

Already that should get you thinking about whether it's required or not. We are tried to be made to believe that it was tithing that was support of the church--and that the 10 % system carries over from produce/livestock to money in modern times because not everyone has those things now. So, ask yourself this, if there was a system in place for support of the church/temple, from the beginning and throughout the Bible, that was monetary, not tithing, then wouldn't that be the example to follow--not the 10%--maybe because the system shown was more fair and didn't take everyone's money?

Read Exodus 30:11-16 Here we find the start of "the shekel of the Sanctuary" It was a set amount, the same amount paid by the rich and poor, everyone alike, money for God, and money for the service of the tabernacle. Now, go to Nehemiah 10:28-32. Here we see that there was an obligation, to once a year pay to contribute for the service of the house of God. Starting to see a pattern yet? In Numbers, I'll just pick a verse but look throughout the book. Numbers 7:19, "...one silver bowl of seventy shekels, according to the shekel of the sanctuary.." Read the Bible, there was a plan to support the house of God, it wasn't 10% tithes, people have twisted what tithes were into money when there was already a monetary support system described in the Bible! I could go on forever--but I'll end by quoting a different verse from Malachi, one you might not hear often. Malachi 3:5 "Then I will draw near to you for judgment; and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers and against the adulterers and against those who swear falsely, and against those who oppress the wage earner in his wages, the widow and the orphan, and those who turn aside the alien and do not fear Me," says the LORD of hosts.

Is it oppressive to require 10% of someone's income, a poor person--Don't take my word for it-read and decide for yourself, just wonder if there was a way to provide for your church described in the Bible with money--then why doesn't anyone teach THAT version?

AnswerTithe is the tenth of our income and it has to be given to God ; Israrelites were commanded by God thorugh Moses regarding the same , please refer to- Leviticus 27:30 'A tithe of everything from the land, whether grain from the soil or fruit from the trees, belongs to the LORD; it is holy to the LORD'. AnswerTithing was things of the land, my favorite verses about tithing are Deuteronomy 14:24-26. Argue tithing 10 % of income all you like-there's nothing to equate tithing with your income in the Bible at all, tithing was in place alongside a monetary system of support of the church, so why is the monetary system not followed? A once a year payment not enough?

If your pastor/preacher defends tithing, ask him for a loan from the church, and ask for a 7 year term! Modern tithing is not about pleasing God, it's a business model for churches.

"Tithing vs Giving" on left

Tithing is only in the old covenant and for the Jews. The land owner required to pay tithes for their produce in the field, not their servant or any tradesman. And in the old covenant the Levites(Priest)are the only qualified to receive the tithes. In the new covenant their is no more Levites priest who will received the tithes so it is not compulsory 2cor9:7 Each man give what he has decided in his heart to give not reluctantly or under compulsion for God loves a CHEERFUL GIVER. It means to say you give what you can AFFORD.God does not want your 10% tithes, but 100% of you to come to repentance and humbly yourself and accepts him as a TRUE BREAD OF LIFE.

Tithing is understood by Christians to be the giving back to the church the first 10% of their earnings. This comes from the Old Testament instruction from God. (Num. 18:23) Jesus, however, taught that while tithing is good, if one truly seeks perfection they should give everything away and follow Him. This is what He did. (Matt. 19:21)

No. The church of christ participates in "offering" which is completely seperate from the Lord's supper but often taken before or after the Lord's supper as a matter of convenience with the men standing and serving.

Mark 12:41-44 says And Jesus sat over against the treasury, and beheld how the people cast money into the treasury; and many that were rich cast in much. And there came a certin poor widow, and she threw in two mites, which make a farthing. And he called unto him his disciples, and saith unto them, Verily I say unto you, that this poor widow hath cast more in, than all they which have cast into the treasury. For all they did cast in of their abundance; but she of her want did cast in all that she had, even all her living.

You give what you wish. No one tells you how much you have to give, and there aren't any "membership fees"

That is what the word tithe means. That is what you are supposed to do, according to the Bible. It doesn't always happen though.

Tithes were paid to the church or to the Lord of the Manor. It meant that you should give one tenth of whatever you had, whether crops or animals or money. There were "tithe barns" in which the Lord of the Manor would store crops or hay which had been given to him.
