In order to enroll in Cosmetology school, most states and cosmetology schools require that you be at least 16 years of age and have either a GED or high school diploma. This is partially so that when you finish cosmetology school, you will be able to take your state cosmetology license exam and get licensed. The best thing to do is contact the cosmetology schools you are most interested in and request more information from them about their age and education requirements.

The length of the program is determined by the state you reside in. Different State Boards require different hours of study.
New York, for example, requires a 1,000 hour certificate of study to take your State Board exam, which will enable you to work in a salon. That means in 7.5 months of full-time study, you could be well on your way to becoming a hairstylist.
If you are looking to have an exciting hairstyling career, I'd recommend moving to New York City! There you will be attached to the mecca of editorial and hi-fashion hair styling

∙ 14y agoYou can easily obtain a GED in almost any locality. You would take the pretest to see what classes you need, and take those classes, if needed. Then, take the classes in 4 different areas. Most people can finish this within a few months. Statistically, you are improving your earning power by having gotten the GED. In the long run, especially with further education and/or training the difference between a high school diploma and a GED will not be huge.
