Yes the Indians did have salt.
The Indians were exploited in many ways. The British put a tax on salt which is needed desprately in their climate.
Don't put it on your food.
If you put salt in the pot and allow it to set for a bit, the salt will spread itself out into the food. It will taste better, and people won't feel like they need as much salt on the food. This is a good thing, especially if those eating the food have high blood pressure, as salt should be avoided with this condition. I usually salt my food as it is cooking and also leave salt out for those who enjoy a saltier flavor.
they put the food in a cold safe room in there chickees
If you think to Himalayan salt this is from the mine of Khevra in Pakistan; this salt is impure, colored sodium chloride. You can put Himalayan salt on foods but it is ridiculous and useless.
Sodium Chloride
Salt is the white grains people put on their food.
Salt in itself is not dangerous. The body actually needs some salt to survive. Salt has been used in the past to preserve food, it does this by removing the water in the food which is needed for bacteria to grow.
