Jehovah's Witnesses are not allowed to use bad language. It reveals what is going on inside of them, can cause others to think negatively of them and shows insensitivity to other people's opinions on swearing.

Ephesians 4:29 says:

"Let a rotten saying not proceed out of your mouth, but whatever saying is good for building up as the need may be, that it may impart what is favorable to the hearers."

Although they try not to use "swear words" based on the above scripture and other principles set out in The Bible, they are imperfect humans and some of them will occasionally use swear words. As far as making promises, they also try to refrain from doing this. Jesus said to let your yes mean yes, and your no mean no. They feel you shouldn't have to swear or promise anything if you always do your best to be honest.

Also, they do not swear loyalty to anything or anyone but Jehovah and his son, Jesus.

Someone's speech reveals what is going on inside them. Using foul language could give off the message that you don't care about the feelings of others. And we believe this because it is written in the bible. At Matthew 15:18 it says "However, whatever comes out of the mouth comes from the heart, and those things defile a man." And also at Ephesians 4:29 it states "Let a rotten word not come out of your mouth, but only what is good for building up as the need may be, to impart what is beneficial to the hearers."
