In my experience yes they do! If you have nothing more to offer or they feel you are not good supply .. Not agreeing, not paying attention, arguing/disagreeing with them. Basically they only need you if you have something they need, it may be money, company, you look good and they like others to think you belong to them. I found that my ex chased me and would almost beg for my company, I went along with this but bearing in mind I had now extracted myself from him (no longer lived in his house) he had no hold over me like he did before I have the upper hand because if he began to rage at me because of some disagreement I could just up and go back to my place, he soon got tired of this the fact he couldn't control me or threaten to kick me out if I 'started' so over time (5 months) his interest in me wained, he now seeks new supply on-line but tries to convince me he loves me and hopes for a future with me! Sickening but I am in control now and I am aware that he looks to me for supply when he can't find it elsewhere, I am now playing the 'game' I have to salvage what he took from me (my sanity) then I can move on, I'm almost there, he no longer interests me or appears attractive to me, I am watching him die before my eyes and my love for him has gone. I read that if a narcissist cannot get supply (attention) for a long time he/she will diminish, shrivel, fade away and that's what I am witnessing with my ex narc. His long term friends have all but given up on him and he looks a mess (unkempt, dirty) I am one of a few who bother to give him the time of day now and yes it's sad but he has hurt so many people with his rages and inconsiderate behaviour he has only himself to blame.
