The 4-cyl. engines used in the 912s & 914s were provided by Volkswagon during the VW-Porsche affiliation. (Only fitting, as Dr. Ferdinand Porsche was the inventor of the VW, a.k.a. the KdF wagon). These engines were known as flat 4's.
Somewhat similar in size & displacement, Subaru had a water-cooled flat 4 engine in tow sizes- 2.2 liter & 2.5 liter.
You probably have a 4 cylinder engine (A.K.A. the V4 Engine), V4 engines aren't very powerful, I previously had a V4 and I had the same problem.

There is no such thing as a V4 2 cylinder engine, because the 'V4' indicates 4 cylinders in a V shape ( as apposed to 4 cylinders working up and down the way) 2 cylinder V shaped engines are mostly found on motorbikes or citreon 2 CV's
There is no such thing as a BMW V4.
V4 or V5. I really like V4 better than V6. I prefer V4. V4 has the most to do besides V5.
