The Arthurian legends are based on stories told in Welsh Oral History of a Romanized Celtic King who ruled the British peoples in a part of what is now southern England from somewhat before the Roman Empire's withdrawal from the British Isles into the period of the Anglo-Saxon invasion.

These stories were revived under the English Tudor Kings, modified and appropriated as a means to justify their right to rule. The features added to the legends by the Tudors corrupted them so severely that it made it difficult to near impossible to ultimately determine what if any truth there was behind the legends.

The real "Arthur" had been trained by the Roman Army in the use of their weapons, armor, and tactics. The Roman Empire then crowned him as the local British king to help them control the British people within their empire. But sometime later the Roman Empire withdrew, leaving him without external support but also allowing him greater freedom to rule his kingdom. When the Anglo-Saxons invaded they eventually defeated him and took over his kingdom.
