Southern Baptist Churches are members of the Southern Baptist Convention, which is not quite a denomination, because it does not truly govern the individual churches. Baptists in general hold to, among other things, "autonomy" of the local church, but through the system of seminaries, Sunday School Board, and other services, the SBC is very influential. It is an association, the largest among Baptists, through which churches pool resources both for missions and outreach, and for services back to the individual churches. There are of course any number of Baptist associations of various sizes and purposes, but none quite as extensively developed as the SBC. The original national Baptist association formed in 1814 was called the "General Missionary Convention of the Baptist Denomination in the United States of America for Foreign Missions". The SBC was formed in 1845 in part over the usually regional differences in perspectives within this association regarding slavery. At the same time the Baptist churches up North remained somewhat loosely joined until 1907, when the Northern Baptist Convention was formed. This name ultimately was changed in 1950 to the American Baptist Convention & in 1972 to American Baptist Churches, USA. During the 1930's and '40's, controversy among the Northern Baptists over adherence to Biblical beliefs spawned the general Association of Regular Baptist Churches and the Conservative Baptist Association, which continue to exist today. These are the major Baptist organizations, yet smaller groups exist & Independent Baptist churches, who often fellowship & associate together, such as the Bible Baptist Fellowship See "Related Links" below for further pertinent information:
Absolutely. Most (all?) Baptist churches have music as considered a vital part of main worship services. A few, like many Primitive Baptists, do not use musical instruments. Other Baptist churches, however, use a variety of instruments, as well as a wide variety of hymns and songs of various styles as part of their worship.
Baptist churches are autonomous therefore it depends on the individual congregation. I have attended some churches that fear that if the church is decorated that there might be an icon misconstrued as an idol. The Catholic church has icons that assist in remembering the saints and prayers. The use of any figure is an individual choice.
GENERALLY no. According to the 2001 Baptist Faith & Message, Section VI,"While both men and women are gifted for service in the church, the office of pastor is limited to men as qualified by Scripture."However, there are some caveats here.1. Not all Southern Baptist groups hold to the 2001 version of the BF&M. For example, many hold to the 1967 version that makes no such statement about pastors and gender.2. Many SB churches have women serving in a capacity that clearly fits into the general role of pastor, but they use terms like "minister" or "director" instead. However, these churches would then have a "senior pastor" who is male. Historically, SB churches have also had a role called "Bible Woman" that sometimes fit the role of pastor or even senior pastor.3. Southern Baptists are non-creedal, and local churches are autonomous. The first means that no Southern Baptist is required to accept a specific doctrinal creed (including the BF&M, which would become a creed if Southern Baptists were forced to agree with it). The second means that local churches are responsible for their own governance and beliefs. As such, each SB church may vary from others in belief.
An Independent Baptist church is just that-- independent. They hold to the fundamentals of faith: the virgin birth, deity AND humanity of Christ, the trinity, inspired KING JAMES VERSION of the Bible for English speaking people, etc. They are independent by not being a part of an association or convention. Although we do like to fellowship of those with a like mind as us, we are not a part of anything formal fellowships. Not all Independent Baptist churches are the same. Most hold to conservative beliefs and music and dress, where others do not. I am an Independent Baptist, and at my church most of the the women wear skirts and wear modest clothing (we do not condemn those who do not, but it is our conviction) but some do not have convictions or preach against wearing pants. We only use the Red Book Church Hymnal for congregation singing and use traditional Gospel music, but some use contemporary music. It varies on what region of the country you are in and just the individual church you attend. Hope that helped!
Baptist churches typically use simple, unscented candles for ceremonial purposes, such as during baptisms or worship services. The focus is on the symbolism of light and purity rather than elaborate candle designs.
In very old Baptist Congregations the Deacons used to use some hand signals during the offering of the tithe in order to be quiet and not interfere with any music or praying that was going on. I grew up in an olderÊSouthern Baptist Church, and some of the elders still do it.
Many different denominations use baptism and thus the "baptistry". Most common is the "Baptist" denomination, however, you will find that most protestant denominations baptise.
Many new black churches were established.

I would definitely say the LDS or MORMON religion. They currently have over 50,000 missionaries serving in almost every country in the world.
