Soldiers in the US Army do get paid, it is based on their rank and how long they have been in the Army. The can receive additional allowances for being married, food, separation, Airborne and combat.

Yes, in one manner or another.

Colonial soldiers were paid in promise. It varied slightly from state to state as there was no national Army, only state militias.

Soldiers during various times of war have been paid in military script. Script was not US dollars, but was a representative of it, and could be used in military post and base exchanges and for other goods and services provided by the various military branches and the USO. Some local economies accepted military script that they exchanged for US or local currency.
