"Discipline themselves" makes it sound like punishment or at least unpleasant! Meditation for anyone - Buddhist, Christian or secular - is an opportunity to be introspective and rise above the hustle and bustle of everyday life. It is is an opportunity to know yourself. Perhaps if you see that a dip in cool pool, a soak in a tub, or sitting quietly in a room listening to music is disciplining yourself, then you might see meditation the same way. Many people think meditation involves sitting locked into a funny position and motionless for hours at a time. In reality it can be the time you sit waiting for a bus or while walking your dog on a quiet path. As far as "locked into a position", sitting meditation involves positioning yourself so that you are comfortably balanced without need of muscle tension to keep yourself erect.

What do Zen Buddhists use to meditate?

Zen Buddhists use whatever is helpful in stilling both the body and the mind. With respect to stilling the body, since it is critical to sit erectly, the most important equipment that Zen Buddhists use to meditate is designed to facilitate sitting erectly. Doing that involves tipping the pelvic girdle slightly forward and getting the knees lower than the hips, which is the best way to do that. So the cushions, benches, mats, and other supports used by Zen Buddhists make it easier to sit with the hips higher than the knees. The two knees and the buttocks provide a tripod that is a solid base for sitting erectly. In terms of stilling the mind once the body is stilled, there are different methods used such as counting the breaths, simply following the breath, or koan training. The idea is to let thoughts settle down until the mind is still. .

What days do Buddhists medtitate or worship?

Some Buddhists meditate all day every day (the monks living in the forest, mainly found in china do that). Others meditate twice a day, once in the morning and once in the night and on full moons. Some meditate only once a day, and some only meditate when they have time to do so. But it is really not specific, but most buddhists try to always meditate on the night of a full moon. And the meditation is worship.
