Primarily it's due to contaminents in bodies of water, whether in oceans, lakes, streams, etc. The majority of this pollution comes from manufacturing or agricultural industries either through dumping contaminents illegally or through the process of run-off, i.e. crop dusting plans spray crop fields with herbicides and the chemicals drain into lakes, streams, etc after it rains. From a manufacturing standpoint, the Mercury is released through smoke stacks, and when it rains, the rain carries the Mercury into the lakes, streams, oceans, etc. Bacteria convert the Mercury into a form that is easily absorbed by small insects and other organisms. When fish eat these, they absorb the Mercury. When a bigger fish eats a smaller fish, it absorbs it's Mercury as well and this is how it moves up the food chain to humans.
I belive they do, not a 100% about that. But I do know that dolphins and whales have to much in them for humans to eat, you can suffer from mercury poisoning.
Yes. Cat fish and essentially all freshwater fish have minimal levels of mercury.
mercury = pregnant = fish
The main source of fish is the Mercury fish. The Mercury fish is a tainted fish found widely in the US streams.
it doesnt matter all of the fish you've eaten have contained mercury so just eat and dont worry about the fishes diet! :p
If the fish is in a mercury- contaminated water. >>none for mercurium!
Swordfish, tilefish and shark are amongst the highest. Larger, predatory fish tend to have higher levels of mercury than small herbivores, since they accumulate all the mercury their prey has consumed.shark!
In some places in the world, mercury is pumped into the ocean as a byproduct of industry. This mercury is then consumed by fish, poisoning the fish. The fish are caught by fishermen and consumed by people, creating a wide range of problems due to the toxic nature of mercury.
predatory fish, Mercury, once ingested never leaves the body, so it is concentrated in the bodies of fish that eat other fish.
Mercury bioaccumulates in fish.
Large predator fish, because they eat smaller fish and the mercury accumulates in the larger fish.
Fish is good for you but can also contain high levels of mercury and PCB's. Many websites offer analysis's of mercury levels in fish, just search fish + mercury in Google. Fish like tuna and swordfish can contain very highlevels of mercury. I wouldn't go out of your way to eat fish everyday, but make sure you get at least 2 servings of oily fish a week
