All unvented gas logs must have a safety pilot. Also all vented gas logs that are for propane must have a safety pilot.
Vented gas logs that use Natural gas do not require safety pilots as the pressure is half that of propane although I would still recommend safety pilots on all installs.
How do you relight a natural gas pilot light?
On most gas fireplaces there are two safeties, that if working properly, will keep the gas from running under the described conditions. One is a 30mv thermocouple that will hold in a pilot operator (similar to a water heater setup). The second is usually a 750mv (0.75 volts) generator that provides the power to open the main gas valve operator. If there is no flame present, there will be no power to "open" either of these. lc
All gas fireplaces have to have a shut-off valve within 10' and that will turn so the key or the handle is parallel to leave gas on and perpendicular to turn gas off. The valve inside the fireplace turns but not indiscriminately. The inner valve will turn to the pilot setting and depress to light the pilot. Once the pilot os stable the knob will un-depress and turn to the On position. For a manual valve this will turn on the gas flow to the main burners. If using a switch or remote turning the valve to On leaves the fireplace valve in a Ready position so the switch or remote will turn on the gas.
Also known as a thermocouple- device generates very small eletrical current from heat of the pilot light, which permits gas valve to open only when pilot light is lit.
No it shouldn't, There is a sensor that turns off the gas if the pilot flame goes out, The only way it would leak gas is if it as a faulty sensor, or a peice of depree gets in the gas line
Pilot lights are used in various ovens, gas fireplaces, and gas heaters. The pilot light burns constantly and is used to ignite the actual flame that heats the previously mentioned items.

If it will not lite at all, copper pilot line kinked,,, bad gas valve, if you have the button on pilot and depressed down all the way. Will light but not stay lite, bad thermocouple.
because its leaking out gas
When pilot light goes out, gas flows out of the pilot light nozzle. If out has continued for a long time, a gas cloud can develop around the furnace. When you go to light the pilot light, you'll ignite this gas cloud and make a big fire ball. If your basement is drafty, you might never get a huge cloud of gas hovering around your furnace. When you notice that your pilot light is out, you should shut off the gas to the furnace and allow any stray gas to dissipate before you turn the gas back on and light the pilot light. alliedallcityinc.com
The pilot light is a small flame which stays on all the time (as in older water heaters for example). When the water temperature drops below the thermostat setting, the main heating gas is turned on and the pilot light ignites it. There are many other uses for pilot lights. To conserve gas, modern water heaters generate a spark to light the gas.

I believe it is called the "pilot light"
Gas fireplaces are a popular item in homes across America. There are several differences between gas fireplaces and traditional wood-burning fireplaces. Gas fireplaces can increase the heating efficiency of a home. There are several types of gas furnaces on the market but according to Bob Vila, direct-vented gas fireplaces are the most efficient type of gas fireplace
Regency manufactures a number different types of fireplaces. They make contemporary gas fireplaces and traditional gas fireplaces. They make indoor and outdoor fireplaces. They also make wood fireplaces, wood stoves, and pellet stoves.
No because water heaters have a safety valves and when the pilot light goes out the safety valve shuts off the gas
