This is because the numbers we use today come from Hinduism.
One of the best places to learn about Hinduism is on the Internet and through books. Another good way is through a teacher, but that way doesn't allow for a person experience of it as you aren't learning and experiencing it for yourself, you are being taught it by somebody and they would be pushing their beliefs onto you. I suggest going to different sites that will give you newsletters on Hinduism (like IndiaDivine). I also recommend the book "The Complete Idiots Guide to Hinduism". I have not read it all the way but it appears to be accurate thus far.
