Yes, they can, but they usually are with a mate or are alone. If you do have more than a pair in a tank, then make sure they can each have their own territory. Angelfish can be very territorial.

Some species of fish are loners, (eg. Siamese fighting fish/ Betta splendens). Some like to be kept as a male/female pair (eg Oscar/ Astronotus ocellatus) and other species like to be kept in groups of 5 or more (eg Discus/ Symphysodon species), except when they are breeding and others like to be kept in larger shoals/schools of over 10 and spawn as a group (eg Clown loach/ Botia macracantha).
