no. babies take their first breath when they are born. the baby does not need to breathe as the mother is breathing so there is oxygen in her blood. the mothers blood exchanges oxygen for the babies carbon dioxide and the baby's tissues get oxygen from its blood.

∙ 12y agoB J Trudinger, Y B Gordon, J G Grudzinskas, M G Hull, P J Lewis, and M E Arrans undertook a study of fetal breathing movements using real-time ultrasound as long ago as 1979 as a test of fetal well being.
Their findings are reported in the British Medical Journal 2 (6190), page 577--579 published on September 8, 1979.
In another study, J Patrick and J Challis, published in October 1980 in Seminars in Perinatology 4(4) pages 275-86, demonstrated that fetal breathing movements are episodic and occur about 30% of the time during the last 10 weeks of pregnancy.
