Depends on the calories of the cereal you are eating. If you consume 800 calories of cereal and burn only 300 calories, then the rest will be stored as fat. You also have to think of the milk consumed. Is it whole milk or skim milk? It's generally not a good idea to over-eat anything. All is good in moderation.
It all depends on what type of cereal you are eating, most of the commercial ones are laden with sugar and many other things your body does not need, and yes, they will put on weight.
On the other hand, eating a healthy breakfast, can actually help you lose weight. I like to eat organic porridge in the mornings or yogurt and fruit, muesli or a banana smoothie.
There are so many healthy breakfasts you can have, without eating all that sugar which is stuffed into most cereals.
While most are fairly high in sugar, the majority of them are pretty decent when it comes to fat. 1 cup of cheerios has 100 calories and very little fat, about 2.5 grams.
