Yes, they do. For various reasons a thermostat can fail to open completely - or even the least bit - always resulting in engine and automatic transmission overheating and sometimes causing permanent damage. This happened to me a couple of times so for decades I have replaced my thermostats every 75,000 miles. (I typically keep a car for 200,000 miles.) Sometimes thermostats will stick open resulting in altered performance and poor emission control. Thermostats are cheap, even if you buy from the dealer, and changing one isn't like brain surgery. Make it a mileage related maintenance item for your car.
