When you put on the brakes by pushing down the brake pedal air pressure is applied to the brake pads?

In all cars and most trucks HYDRAULIC pressure is used to apply the brakes. In an air brake system such as is found on medium and heavy duty trucks the air is actually released to apply the brakes.

Why aren't hydraulic brakes used for rear wheels when the same is used for the front wheels?

All modern mass-produced cars and light trucks DO have hydraulic brakes on the front and the rear wheels. Heavy trucks generally have air brakes on all the wheels. Maybe you are thinking of cars that have disk brakes on the front and drum brakes on the rear? On cars, these are both hydraulically operated using the same hydraulic (brake) fluid. In normal stopping situations, the front brakes do more work than the rear brakes. Maybe 70 or 80% of the braking is done by the front wheels (it depends on where the weight is in the car and how fast you stop). Disk brakes are a somewhat better brake for a car, but drum brakes are a little cheaper to manufacture. So, disk brakes are almost always used on the front wheels where the braking is more important. Drum brakes are used on the back of some cars to save money. Note that performance cars (sports cars) almost always have disk brakes on all of the wheels.

Do air brakes use brake fluid?

No, they use air pressure or actually the lack of air pressure to stop the vehicle. The brakes are fully on until pressure builds up in the tank releasing the brakes. When you push the brake pedal this removes air from the system and applies the brakes.

Is it necessary to pump up the brakes in cars to make them last longer?

Pumping gently will reduce friction, produce less heat and help the brakes last a little longer. This procedure is not recommended if you have a truck with air operated brakes.

How do you adjust brake imbalanced?

We would need to know what type of brakes you have... S-cam air brakes, air disc brakes, air piston brakes, air wedge brakes, hydraulic drum brakes, hydraulic disc brakes... they're all different.

How effective are air brakes verses a standard set of brakes?

Air brakes are just as effective as a standard set of brakes. The advantages to air brakes are that you do not have to worry about leaking brake fluid.
