Catahoulas can make excellent family pets, with the right people. the owners have to take the leadership role or the dog will dominate your life. I have a catahoula, as a working dog and a pet, he is wonderful. he is independent, yet very loyal and loving, super smart and intuitive. he has a great, happy, fun, hardworking attitude and temperament. however, if catahoulas are handled too roughly, they have a likely hood of acting aggressively. they make great watch dogs and very protective, but not aggressive (unless the situation calls for it) towards new people.
socialize the dog early with many different types of dogs and other animals.
I would not recommend a Catahoula for a first time pet owner. they are very smart and can often outsmart you. you have to be clear and consistent with what you want from the dog. often times when they don't listen it is because the handler/owner is not communicating with him/her clearly.
I love catahoulas. they are a one of a kind breed, and can make great pets.

Since basset hounds are low to the ground, young children may try to ride on their backs - this should be avoided at all costs. Basset hounds would make a good pet for a family with children, but be prepared for lots of drool, shedding and stubbornness!
