Some cats are used to having an owner who gives them food and plays with them while others..... just have rabies.
Yes, cats are and can show affection, but an appetite is a prime motivator. If they see you eating, they are suddenly very interested in what you are doing, and they hope you share with them.
They do love you if you take good care of them, it's just that they like food as well. Never think that cats are greedy, selfish little creatures.
