They do not understand every word you say; but they do recognize and and are able to understand the meaning of some words; if you say them regularly in a certain context.
Plus they are very good at reading your body language and emotional state.

∙ 11y agoNot really. They recognize particular patters as being precursors to feeding (e.g. when he has dinner and then goes to the cupboard). They will recognize their own names, sometimes. They can be trained to recognize certain specific noise patterns. However, they cannot really understand what we say; they do, however, learn the tone of voice we use, and will respond to that.

∙ 14y agoNo, but they can learn what some words mean. For example, when I say "kitty can food", my cat gets really excited, as she has learned that when she hears that she will get can food.
