New advances in cell phone tower technology are coming into play on many cruise lines! Cingular has just implemented towers aboard all NCL cruise ships that will provide you with a reliable cell-phone connection (at a premium) you can use anywhere on the vessel. Check with your cruise line before you sail. It may be cheaper, however, to use the landlines in each of the ports of call with international calling cards. Whatever you do, try to avoid dialing out from your cabin. Those calls typically run $5.95/minute domestic and $6.95/minute international. Happy Sailing!

Cell phones will only work if they are within a reasonable proximity to a cell. There are no cells in the ocean. If they are more than 10 to 12 miles off the coast, there is no chance of them working. If they do connect to a cell, it will have to be compatible with the cell phone in use.
